Upcoming Events

Remember to check out the tab at the top of the blog titled "Upcoming Events". New events have been added for May.

A letter regarding our last 3rd grade teacher-directed PE day was sent home last week. We are requesting $5 from each student for this fun-filled water afternoon and cookout. Please have your $5 cash in by Friday, May 9th. This is sure to be a GREAT day for all our students!

3RD PLAY DAY:
Come out and join us to cheer on our fabulous students as they have fun competing in this year's PLAY DAY on Wednesday, May 7th from 9:00-11:00. You may want to bring a lawn chair and a cool drink. We hope to see you all there!

Though FCAT is over for 3rd graders, our learning is not. We look forward to seeing every student each day to continue our preparation for 4th grade. Please remember to check your child's clothing before they wear summer clothes to school. They have grown so much this year and we are seeing shorts and skirts that are shorter than the school dress-code allows. All clothing should be as long or longer than the tips of the fingertips when your child is standing and arms are by their sides. Also, if you would like to have a final conference to review your child's progress and plan for summer (anything your child might need to review this summer to prevent loss of newly acquired skills), please contact us to schedule a conference for the end of May.

Biographies for Kids

For the next two weeks, we will be focusing on a biography genre study. The students have already begun to get excited about this due to reading our first story about Bessie Coleman! Of course, they all wanted to know if I was related to Bessie. :)

Here is a link to Biographies for Kids. Students can enjoy reading about other famous people at home!

We will continue to learn more about Bessie Coleman and other famous Americans next week.

Reminders & Announcements

If students would like to send Candy Grams to anyone for $1 each, simply send in the completed slips and money on Monday! New slips were sent home today, February 7th.

For Friday, February 14th, your child may bring in Valentine cards if they want to, but they are not required. Please be sure to include ALL class members or do not send any at all. Thank you!

Many students are still working on the i-ready reading diagnostic testing, so please do not begin working on i-ready reading at home until Monday, February 17th. We will complete all diagnostics by next Friday.

In reading, our homework has been modified. Students are to CONTINUE reading 20 minutes each night. Students are to also read a short text (assigned by the teacher) and answer a few questions (also assigned by the teacher) about the text. We review this work immediately when turned in. Students will have the additional text and questions 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday). We will continue this through the end of March.

You can access the Scholastic Books website at anytime and order books at a great price! Just look on the left of our main blog page for the picture link. Please use the code listed under the link that goes with your child's homeroom teacher once you log into the Scholastic site. You'll need your own username and password first, then your teacher's code. Thank you to all who have ordered books and materials this year!! We have been able to add to our growing classroom libraries because of your support!

Coming soon... FCAT-like math and reading sample problems. We will post sample problems that relate to our current studies soon.

Thank you to all parents for your support and congratulations to all students who were rewarded with ice cream parties this week for earning an "80%" or above score on the reading, math, or science CGA2! We see a lot of growth!

Have a great weekend!

And...We're Back!

As we enter into the 3rd 9 weeks, be on the look out for more frequent updates and examples of the skills we are working on in class, especially in reading and mathematics.

It is very important for all students to be in school, all day, as much as possible. We will also be sending out invitations for math and reading tutoring sessions soon. Tutoring invitations will be given on an individual, as needed, basis. Tutoring will run from the first week in February through the beginning of April.

You should have received (or will receive Friday, 1/24) the scores for the CGAs (Curriculum Guide Assessments) in science, math, and reading. These scores were written inside the students' planners on this week's page. We have included the baseline, given at the beginning of the year, the CGA 1 from the 1st 9 weeks, and the most recent, CGA 2 from this past week. If you have any questions or concerns about these scores, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We are excited about the amount of growth the students have had so far this year and look forward to working hard with your child to continue to increase that growth during the 3rd 9 weeks!

Happy Learning!

FUN RUN

Wow! We are neck in neck between our classes! Mrs. Jeter's Jellyfish are up to $14 per lap and Mrs. Coleman's Crusaders are up to $16 per lap! Who will make it to $20 per lap tonight?

THANK YOU to all who have worked to get pledges so far this week! There's still time to get a few more. Just log in to funrun.com with your code (located on your child's Fun Run brochure) and enter any additional pledges you get.

We love the Fun Run Fundraiser because the students learn great character lessons, exercise, and we actually get part of the pledges to purchase additional materials for our classes! That's right, the teachers get to make purchases that your child can benefit from!

This year, Mrs. Coleman plans on purchasing magazine subscriptions to educational magazines, including National Geographic for Kids Magazine! These will be awesome for classroom reading!

Happy Pledging!
